Genting Highlands Travel Guide
Attractions, the cable car, hotels and practical tips for Malaysia’s cool mountain resort, an easy day trip or overnight stay from Kuala Lumpur.
Genting Highlands is a hill resort in the Titiwangsa Mountains, built on and around Mount Ulu Kali on the border between Pahang and Selangor. It sits at roughly 1,700 to 1,800 metres above sea level, which is why the air feels noticeably cooler than in Kuala Lumpur and why clouds often drift through the resort. Most visitors arrive for the theme parks, the cable car ride up through the forest and the chance to escape the lowland heat.
The resort grew from a private mountain road built in the 1960s and opened to the public in 1971. Today Resorts World Genting runs it as a large, self-contained destination with hotels, malls, two theme parks, restaurants, a garden attraction and a temple below the summit. It is also one of the easiest highland trips from Kuala Lumpur, roughly an hour’s drive away in good conditions.
This guide covers what to see, how the cable cars and buses fit together, the weather, where to stay and how to plan one or two days. Operators rename facilities, change opening arrangements and adjust fares often, so treat the details here as planning help and confirm them close to your trip. For other places to visit, see our Malaysia travel guides.
Best Things to Do in Genting Highlands
The main attractions fall into two groups: the summit, around SkyAvenue and the theme parks, and a few mid-hill stops reached by cable car or a short ride. You can see the highlights in a day if you choose carefully.

Summit
Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park
The resort’s outdoor theme park opened in February 2022 on about 26 acres. It is arranged as nine themed lands inspired by well-known films and adventure stories, with rides ranging from gentle family attractions to roller coasters and water rides, with food outlets around the park. Eagle Mountain, Andromeda Base and Liberty Lane are among the lands on the park map.
The park is open-air, so mist and rain are part of the day and some rides can leave you wet.
The park’s mobile app shows wait times and offers a virtual queue for ride slots. Confirm current ticket and ride arrangements with the operator.

Mid-hill to summit
Awana SkyWay Cable Car
The cable car is the best-known way up and an attraction in its own right. Since October 2024 the operator calls it the Genting Highlands Premium Outlets Cable Car, but it is still widely known as the Awana SkyWay. It climbs from the mid-hill terminal beside the outlet centre to Genting Highlands Station at SkyAvenue, in roughly ten minutes, with views over forest, ridges and, as you near the top, the SkyWorlds park below. A free stop at Chin Swee Station lets you visit the temple and rejoin the line on the same ticket.
A second line, the Genting Gohtong Jaya Cable Car (formerly the Genting SkyWay), runs from the Gohtong Jaya terminal. Both lines have operated side by side since 1 October 2024, and only the Premium Outlets line has the stop at Chin Swee and the optional glass-floor gondolas.
Ticket types, operating hours and maintenance closures change. Go back down by the same line you came up so you arrive at the right bus terminal.

Mid-hill, Chin Swee Station
Chin Swee Caves Temple
A Chinese temple complex on a rocky, forested hillside, reached from the cable car’s Chin Swee Station. It opened in 1994 and is known for its nine-storey pagoda, tiered red-and-gold roofs, terraces with wide views and a large seated Buddha. Cloud often settles around the buildings, giving the temple a calm feel that contrasts with the resort above.
The temple is an active place of worship, not just a viewpoint, so keep voices low and follow any posted rules.
Dress modestly, wear shoes with grip for steps and terraces, and allow time for the walk between the station and the main buildings.
Summit, next to SkyAvenue
Skytropolis Indoor Theme Park
Skytropolis is the indoor option, set in the First World Plaza complex beside SkyAvenue. It has more than twenty rides, grouped by the operator into family, adventure and thrill categories, so a mixed group can find something for everyone. Everything is under a roof, so it is the natural choice when the weather turns wet.
Height and supervision rules differ from ride to ride, and rides can close for maintenance, so check the operator’s current list.
Summit
SkyAvenue
The resort’s main mall, which works like a high street at the top of the mountain. Several floors hold fashion and sportswear shops, restaurants and cafés, a hawker-style Malaysian Food Street, a cinema and a number of family entertainment attractions. It also houses the upper cable car station on Level 4, so it is where most cable car visitors arrive.
A good place to warm up, eat and shelter from rain between outdoor visits.
Mid-hill
Genting Highlands Premium Outlets
An outlet shopping centre at mid-hill, directly beside the lower cable car terminal. It is linked by bridges to Sky Sentral, the bus terminal where the express coaches from Kuala Lumpur arrive, so many day visitors pass through it on the way to and from the cable car. The adjoining car park is where drivers who prefer to ride up can leave their vehicle.
Shops, dining and parking arrangements here change, so check the current directory on the day.
Mid-hill
Eufloria Gardens & Sculpture Park
A floral attraction near the outlet centre that the operator bills as Malaysia’s largest floral glasshouse. It brings together a pavilion of zodiac sculptures, a rainforest grove with an elevated canopy walk and a seasonal flower garden. It suits anyone wanting something quieter than the theme parks.
Opening days and hours vary through the year, so check the operator’s calendar before you go.
How to Get to Genting Highlands from Kuala Lumpur
Genting Highlands lies north-east of Kuala Lumpur, off the Karak Expressway. Most visitors use one of three routes, and the cable car can be added to any of them.
From Kuala Lumpur to the hill
By car
Drivers leave the expressway at Genting Sempah and follow the winding access road up the mountain. The drive is typically around an hour in good conditions, but weekends, school holidays and wet weather can make it considerably longer. The access road is private and a charge may apply, so check the current arrangements. At the top you can park at SkyAvenue for the summit attractions, or leave the car at the Genting Highlands Premium Outlets car park and ride the cable car up.
By express coach
Resorts World Tours runs express coaches to Sky Sentral, the mid-hill bus terminal beside the Premium Outlets, from Gombak LRT Station and KL Sentral. Other coach services also run from Kuala Lumpur terminals. From Sky Sentral you board the cable car, or take the resort’s shuttle bus to other parts of the resort. Check the timetable and the last return departure before you go.
By taxi, private transfer or ride-hailing
A taxi, private car or ride-hailing trip is the most flexible option for groups, late departures and luggage. Agree the destination clearly, since the resort has more than one drop-off point, and allow extra time at weekends.
Using the cable cars and moving around
- Genting Highlands Premium Outlets Cable Car (Awana SkyWay)
- Boards on the upper level of the mid-hill terminal and reaches SkyAvenue in roughly ten minutes, with the optional Chin Swee stop on the way. This is the line most day visitors use.
- Genting Gohtong Jaya Cable Car (Genting SkyWay)
- Runs from the Gohtong Jaya terminal below the resort to the summit, and is useful if your bus or car arrives there. Free shuttle buses link the two terminals.
- Shuttle buses
- The resort runs shuttles between its main terminals and some hotels; ask at the terminal information counter.
- Walking and covered links
- The main summit buildings are joined by covered walkways and link bridges, so you can move between SkyAvenue, Skytropolis and the hotels without going outside much. Allow more time than the map suggests.
Routes, fares, timetables and naming change. Confirm the current options with the operator before you rely on any one of them.
Genting Highlands Weather
The altitude gives Genting Highlands a cool, damp climate that feels very different from Kuala Lumpur. Mornings and evenings can be properly chilly, daytime is mild rather than hot, and low cloud rolls through at any season. That mist makes the mountain views dramatic, and it also hides them some days.
Rain is common and often arrives suddenly, sometimes as persistent drizzle. Visibility can drop quickly, which matters on the access road and for the cable car views, and outdoor surfaces at the theme park can turn slippery. Operators post closures and maintenance notices, so check them on the day if the weather looks poor.
A bright morning in Kuala Lumpur says little about what you will find at the top.
Best Time to Visit Genting Highlands
The biggest influence on your visit is not the season but the day of the week. Weekdays are generally calmer, with shorter queues and easier travel, while weekends, school holidays and public holidays bring crowds, heavier traffic on the access road and longer waits at the cable car and rides.
Rain can fall in any month and no period guarantees dry weather, so include indoor options in your plan. In the theme parks, arriving early gives you the best chance to ride more before queues build.
Major festival periods such as Chinese New Year draw large numbers of visitors and can fill hotels and coaches well in advance, so book early and check opening arrangements.
Where to Stay in Genting Highlands
Many visitors come for the day, but staying overnight lets you start both parks fresh and avoid the road at the busiest hours. Hotel names and categories change, so check current listings.
Summit resort hotels
A cluster of large hotels sits at the top, run by Resorts World Genting. They range from large, value-oriented towers, including First World Hotel, which is recognised as one of the biggest hotels in the world by room count, to premium options such as Crockfords and family-focused SkyWorlds Hotel beside the outdoor theme park. Staying here puts you within covered walking distance of SkyAvenue and the entertainment venues.
Mid-hill accommodation
Resorts World Awana sits at mid-hill, close to the outlet centre and the lower cable car terminal. It suits visitors who prefer a quieter stay and want to ride up for the day. A free shuttle has linked Awana with the terminal, but check current arrangements.
Budget considerations
Rates swing sharply between weekdays, weekends and holiday periods, so a price seen for one date says little about another. Booking a weekday early often brings the best value, and the larger value hotels usually trade quiet for convenience.
Day trip or overnight stay?
A day trip is enough for a taste: the cable car, one park and a meal. Stay a night if you want both theme parks, travel with children or prefer to avoid peak-hour roads and the pressure of the last coach down.
Food, Shopping and Entertainment
Dining is built around the malls and hotels. SkyAvenue has the widest choice, from quick bites and cafés to sit-down Chinese, Japanese and international restaurants, and the Malaysian Food Street area gives you a hawker-style way to try local dishes without leaving the summit. Halal availability varies by outlet, so look for signs or ask if that matters to you.
Shopping is mostly a rainy-day pleasure: SkyAvenue for shops, a cinema and family attractions, and the Premium Outlets at mid-hill for outlet brands. The resort also has a casino, which is age-restricted, has its own entry rules and is separate from the family attractions.

Afternoon: shopping or the temple
Browse SkyAvenue, or if you skipped Chin Swee earlier, stop there on the way down.
Evening: head down or stay on
Allow generous time to return to Kuala Lumpur, and check the time of the last coach if you do not have a car.
Choose one theme park for a day trip; two leave little time for anything else.

Before You Travel to Malaysia
Genting Highlands is a domestic trip within Malaysia, but you must enter the country first, and what you need depends on your passport and the reason for your journey. Rules can change, so check them well before you book.
- Make sure your passport covers your travel dates, and confirm the exact validity rule with the Malaysian authorities.
- Find out whether your nationality needs a visa for tourism, and which documents are normally listed.
- Check whether the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) must be completed before you fly.
- If you are starting from the capital, the Kuala Lumpur travel guide covers arrival and city planning.
Holding a visa or an MDAC does not promise entry; the immigration officer at the border makes that decision.
Practical Travel Tips
Small habits that make a mountain day easier.
Dress in layers
Mountain air is cool and damp even when Kuala Lumpur is hot. Carry a light jacket and a rain layer, and bring a spare top if you plan to ride water-based attractions.
Plan transport both ways
Know where your coach or taxi returns from, and ride down on the same cable car line you came up on.
Start early
Early starts help you beat queues and the heavier traffic on the access road.
Check the operator before you go
Cable car maintenance, ride closures and opening times change. Look at the operator’s current notices on the morning of your trip.
Travelling with children
Check ride height rules in advance, bring warm layers and plan rest breaks.
Genting Highlands Travel FAQs
Where is Genting Highlands located?
Genting Highlands sits in the Titiwangsa Mountains on the border between Pahang and Selangor, built around Mount Ulu Kali. It is roughly an hour’s drive from Kuala Lumpur in good traffic; the Kuala Lumpur travel guide covers the capital and how to reach it.
How far is Genting Highlands from Kuala Lumpur?
It is a short trip from the capital: the drive normally takes around an hour in good conditions, though weekends, holidays and rain can add a lot of time. Express coaches and taxis make the same journey, and the cable car adds a short ride at the end.
Can you visit Genting Highlands in one day?
Yes. A day trip can cover the cable car, one theme park, a meal and the Chin Swee stop if you start early. Seeing both parks plus the temple in one day is rushed, so stay overnight if you want them all.
What is the best way to reach Genting Highlands?
It depends on your group. Driving or taking a taxi is the most flexible, an express coach to Sky Sentral is the simplest for solo travellers and small groups without a car, and both can be combined with the cable car. Check current timetables and the last return departure.
Is Genting Highlands suitable for families?
Yes. Skytropolis and SkyWorlds both have rides for different ages, and the malls, cinema, food outlets and gardens add gentler options. Check ride height rules in advance and bring warm layers, since cool air and long queues tire children quickly.
What are the main attractions?
Genting SkyWorlds, Skytropolis Indoor Theme Park, the Awana SkyWay cable car (now the Genting Highlands Premium Outlets Cable Car), Chin Swee Caves Temple, SkyAvenue, the Genting Highlands Premium Outlets and Eufloria Gardens & Sculpture Park.
Is the cable car necessary?
No, you can drive or take a coach to the summit. But the cable car is a scenic part of the trip, it is how most visitors reach Chin Swee Caves Temple, and parking at the mid-hill terminal lets you skip the last stretch of the access road.
What should visitors wear?
Wear layers. Even when Kuala Lumpur is hot, the highlands feel cool, misty and sometimes damp, so bring a light jacket, a rain layer and closed shoes with grip. If you plan to ride water-based attractions, pack a spare top.
Is Genting Highlands worth visiting?
It is, if you enjoy theme parks, cool air and an easy escape from the city, and accept that it is a commercial resort rather than a quiet nature reserve. Go on a weekday, start early and plan around the weather.
Can visitors stay overnight in Genting Highlands?
Yes. There are several hotels at the summit and at mid-hill, from value-oriented to upscale, and staying overnight lets you spread the attractions over two days. Rates change a lot between weekdays and holidays, so book early.
Do visitors from abroad need a visa or the MDAC for this trip?
That depends on your passport and why you are travelling. Some visitors need a visa, and many must complete the Digital Arrival Card before they arrive. The checker on our home page and the eVisa, Documents and MDAC guides show what is normally listed; confirm the final rules with the Malaysian authorities.
