Malaysia eVisa for Student Pass Holders
Studying in Malaysia usually starts with your institution, passes through education and immigration approvals and only then reaches the question of an entry visa. This page explains how those stages relate and which documents the checker lists for student cases.
Studying in Malaysia
International study involves several parties, each responsible for a different piece. Seeing who does what makes the rest of the process easier to follow.
Your institution
Accepts you as a student and supports the approvals that follow.
Education approval
The checker lists approval from Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS) among the student papers.
Student Pass
Immigration approval connected to your study. The checker describes it as Student Pass approval issued by Immigration.
Entry visa
A separate visa to enter Malaysia, needed only where your passport requires one.
What Shapes Your Student Entry Route
Five questions decide how your own route looks. The answers differ from student to student.
Which passport do you hold?
Nationality decides whether a separate entry visa applies. The pass approval is a separate matter.
Have you been accepted?
Acceptance by a Malaysian institution is the starting point for the approvals that follow.
Which approvals are in place?
Education and immigration approvals normally come before any entry-visa step, because that step builds on them.
Where are you applying from?
The country you apply from can add documents. The checker asks for it and shows only what applies.
Do other entry conditions apply?
Age, an earlier passport or entry type can bring in further items. None is requested from every student.
The checker sorts passports into three groups for study. The wording below is the checker's own.
Entry visa required, with prior approval
Entry visa required; prior approval may also be needed. An eVisa application alone does not grant a Student Pass.
No separate entry visa, but the pass approval is required
Separate entry visa not required; Student Pass approval is required.
Needs further confirmation
Student Pass approval is required; whether a separate entry visa applies needs further confirmation.
Student Documents
Student papers fall into three kinds: approvals, evidence from your institution and your own identity documents. The lists come from the checker's catalog and rules, and they are a reference rather than an approval decision.
Immigration and education approvals
VDR (Visa With Reference) Letter from Immigration Department
Visa With Reference letter issued by the Immigration Department.
Student Pass Approval from Immigration
Student Pass approval issued by Immigration.
EMGS (Education Malaysia Global Services) Approval
Approval from Education Malaysia Global Services.
Institution and studies
Acceptance Letter from Malaysian Educational Institution
Acceptance letter from the Malaysian institution.
Proof of Payment for Tuition Fees
Proof that tuition fees have been paid.
Educational Certificates and Transcripts
Your educational certificates and transcripts.

How the Approvals Fit Together
Four parties handle four different steps. The order matters more than the speed.
Institution
Offers a place and provides the acceptance letter and supporting papers.
Approvals
Education and immigration approvals, including EMGS and Student Pass approval, are obtained.
Entry visa
Where your passport needs one, the entry-visa step follows and relies on those approvals.
You
Prepare documents, check details and plan travel around what has been confirmed.
No fixed timeline applies to every student. The time depends on how soon each party completes its step and on the authorities' own review.
Student Preparation Checklist
Organise the practical side in three phases.
While approvals are pending
- Keep every letter from your institution in one folder.
- Check that your name is written identically on every document.
- Read messages from your institution and from the application service promptly.
Before you book and pack
- Wait for the approvals you need before committing to non-refundable travel.
- Gather the documents the checker lists for your case.
- Make clear scans or copies and keep the originals together.
Before departure
- Re-read your documents once more for mismatched details.
- Keep your institution's contact details to hand.
- Carry the approvals and your passport together in your hand luggage.

Student Pass eVisa FAQs
Answers to questions students ask before travelling to study in Malaysia.
Is a Student Pass the same as an eVisa?
No. A Student Pass is an approval connected to your studies, while an eVisa is a way of applying for permission to enter where your passport requires it. The checker states that an eVisa application alone does not grant a Student Pass, and for some passports a separate entry visa is not required although Student Pass approval still is.
What is EMGS approval?
The checker lists EMGS (Education Malaysia Global Services) Approval among the student documents and describes it as: Approval from Education Malaysia Global Services. It is one of the approvals that come before the entry-visa step.
What does my institution need to provide?
The checker lists Acceptance Letter from Malaysian Educational Institution, proof of payment for tuition fees and educational certificates and transcripts among the student documents. Ask your institution which of these it supplies and which you gather yourself.
In what order do the approvals come?
Acceptance by the institution comes first, followed by the education and immigration approvals. Where an entry visa is needed, that step builds on those approvals, which is why the checker lists them as documents for the visa step.
Is a Visa With Reference letter always needed?
No. VDR (Visa With Reference) Letter from Immigration Department is listed with the student approvals, but Visa With Reference items apply only where an entry visa is needed. Whether that is true for you depends on your passport.
Do younger students need anything extra?
The checker lists birth certificate when the applicant is under 16. It does not ask for it from every student, so check the conditions that apply to you.
How should I prepare for arrival?
Keep your acceptance letter, approvals and passport together, check that details match across them, and keep your institution's contact details to hand. Entry remains subject to the applicable immigration requirements.
